At the CeBit 2008 held in Hannover Germany from 4-9 March, AMD announced two major product news. First was the launch of 780 GPU chipset. AMD claimed that the 780 series chipset manufactured using 55nm process technology, when paired with an AMD Phenom 9000 series quad-core processor or an Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor, will deliver significant enhancements in gaming and high-definition experiences for mainstream PC customers (Ref). This can be seen from the blu-ray playback performance between AMD 780 chipset vs Intel G35 chipset in the following video.
At the same time, AMD also demonstrated at the CeBit 2008 two 45nm native quad-core chips. The two news chips, one code-named Shanghai for the server and one code-named Deneb for the desktop, were produced using AMD latest 45nm process technology in Dresden Germany. Unlike Intel’s 45nm process, AMD 45nm process uses immersion lithography which allows greater resolution in printing fine features, as well as conventional polysilicon gate and oxynitride. The two new 45nm chips are expected to launch in the second half of this year (Ref).
